The cloning facility supports both FAT32 and NTFS partitions. Like Ghost it images your existing drive or partition onto your new hard drive or file. Plenty of reasons why you might switch hard drives in the same machine (failure, more space, or simply moving them around on the bus), and plenty of other ways to tell if software is actually now on a different machine and requires re-activation (the reason they do this anyway). There are several vendor-restricted free versions of Acronis True Image that is free for those who have bought hard drives from Seagate ( or Western Digital). I thought it would be handy to have a file copy of the cloud data at hand. The hard drive, IMO, is not a good thing to tie into copy protection.

Whatever is used to differentiate one hard drive from another is very likely hidden in the firmware or something, and therefore not accessible to the backup software. After spending two days trying to clone my existing HDD in my old Dell XPS 8500, running Windows 10 Pro 64, onto a new Samsung 860 EVO SSD, using (at least attempting to) 3 different software vendors products, Acronis True Image 2015 OEM (it would install, but would not run) Macrium Reflect 7 Free, and Aomei Backupper, Ive concluded that if. Only clone when I absolutely must change disks, something I avoid unless a drive falls over on me.

I use True Image (and superduper on Mac) to make full system images, rather than cloning and switching drives when I need to restore. So I'm assuming that the only time you use clone instead of system restore is when you upgrade/replace your system drive for some reason, correct? At least when I backup/clone my system, I don't have to re-authorize things, since dongles are USB peripherals) (Sidebar note: I guess this is why I am one of the few people who actually doesn't mind using dongles. But for the honest user that simply wants to back up his system regularly, this is unfair.Īnyway, your help is very much appreciated. I can understand companies that do this to prevent piracy. But after that, I guess you have to buy the software again once your authorizations run out.

You are give, I think 5 authorizations to start with. It becomes a pain, because companies like IK Multimedia dock you each time you re-authorize.

So my question is, does anyone know of any utilities/tools that lets a user assign the same drive serial numbers to a cloned drive, so that the plugins don't see different system configuration?

So that must mean that these plugins are looking for some hardware serial number embedded in the drive somewhere. I know that these usually scream for you to re-authorize if it thinks your system/hard drive configuration has changed. But for the life of me, I can't figure out why when I clone from one hard drive to an exact model duplicate hard drive (that has the same size), I always have to re-authorize all of my IK multimedia plugins and a host of others. I've started cloning my drives in my DAW a few years back to preserve my system.

It seems like the only answers these days are: 1) update your bios, 2) contact your manufacturer, 3) reinstall, 4) dead silence or 5) random guess tangentially related to the question.Drive Cloning (How to retain Hard Drive Serial Number)? It's not like restoring photos of your cat. Reinstalling a dev box with a lot of tools and third party sdk's and libraries can take forever. after several YEARS I finally kept my promise. Reinstall? That's the best answer people can give? Sheesh. Open Description for info and links I'm asked almost every day to make a video about cloning Windows 10. The following is not directed at you DadCat. While the encryption is running, so it's not like you are dead in the water, just slower. Acronis True Image (and Macrium, Windows Backup) wont create image in Backup and Restore My system: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit C-drive is a 250GB Plextor SSD Acronis True Image 2011 Background: I setup a weekly scheduled disk image of my system drive (C:) that gets sent to an external HDD (4TB). I think 70GB on a typical hard drive would be a couple hours, so it should be less than that. It will take some time to encrypt the drive, but on an SSD it should go pretty quickly. Afterward you can re-enableīitlocker and it will encrypt the drive. That means you don't need to disable bitlocker and can just back up the existing drive and restore to your SSD. Backups of a bitlocker volume are not encrypted.
